Weight Loss Plus a Whole Lot More!
Bariatric (weight loss) surgery also comes with a number of other benefits. Invariably obese individuals also experience obesity-related illnesses. Weight loss surgery is an effective way to reduce the incidents of these conditions.
Many obese individuals also develop type 2 diabetes. Studies (Dixon) show that patients who undergo gastric banding surgery can also expect to see the remission of their diabetes in 50% to 80% of cases. In Professor Hamdorf’s research (Hamdorf), he found that 74% of patients saw improvements in type 2 diabetes.
Obese patients may also experience hypertension or high blood pressure. Professor Hamdorf noted in his research that 31% of patients saw improvements in hypertension. Patients in his study also reported a cessation or reduction of the blood pressure medication and improvements in indicators relating to cardiovascular disease, such as the decrease in cholesterol, waist circumference and liver function.
Other studies indicate that weight loss surgery is also associated with a resolution or improvement in gastroesophageal reflux disease, obstructive sleep apnoea, depression and joint and back pain.
What Your Waist May Tell You About Your Future!
Waist circumference reduction was an important outcome of Professor Hamdorf’s research. Weight circumference can be used clinically to identify patients with body fat distribution, particularly around the internal organs of the body. High waist circumference is understood to be a risk factor for cardiovascular disease. In recent studies (17) waist circumference has been positively associated with death, with a 25% increase in death for every 10cm increase in waist circumference.
